Mystery in the parc
Bichromic children illustration printed with a risograph for Grilled Cheese magazine – February 2024
Catherine and Julien ask me to create 2 full page illustrations with spot illustrations to accompany a mystery story about a group of kids playing in a parc when their picnic lunch gets stolen! The readers can try to guess who the thieves are. There is also a game included in the 4 pages.
Working within the constraints of a limited color palette can significantly amplify the creative process. This project was no exception; it was both enjoyable and demanding, given that only two colors were available. This restriction may appear limiting at first, but it often encourages a deeper exploration of shade, tone, and contrast. By using only two colors, every choice becomes more impactful, and the nuances of each color are brought to the forefront. This intense focus on a constrained palette can lead to unexpectedly vibrant and dynamic compositions that might not have emerged with a broader spectrum at one’s disposal.
Moreover, embracing the challenge of delivering powerful messages or stirring up particular emotions in the audience with just a handful of elements can be quite exhilarating. These circumstances provide wonderful opportunities for imaginative problem-solving and affirm the adage that “less is sometimes more.” The appealing simplicity of two-tone artwork can indeed grab the spotlight and leave an enduring mark, illustrating that even the most minute artistic choices hold great potential to inspire and resonate.
I had a blast creating these children illustration!
